Defence in depth is a strategy for security that focuses on having multiple layers of protection for network and computers. If one layer is breached, there are more layers of protection in place that a hacker must go through before they get to your network of computers. The hacker will thus give up and move to another target or they be detected before they achieve their goal.
How to apply defense depth strategy when securing a wireless network
- Install a VPN account to a wireless router that is VPN enabled
VPNs allow for encryption of all traffic entering and leaving your network. They allow you to create an encrypted tunnel that can protect your privacy, provide anonymous browsing and have other great features as well. The more sophisticated VPN providers allow you to install their VPN service on your VPN-capable internet router so that every device on your network is protected. Since the router does all the encryption and decryption work, you don't have to install VPN clients or reconfigure any of your PCs or mobile devices. The protection is virtually transparent; you won't notice anything except for some delay caused by the encryption and decryption process. This thus enhances wireless network security.
- Secure DSL cable with a firewall router
You should add an inexpensive wired or wireless router with built-in firewall capability to provide you with an additional outer-layer of protection. Enable the router's "Stealth Mode" to help make your computers less visible to attackers in order to secure your wireless network.
- Enable and configure your wireless or wired router’s and computer’s firewalls
Firewalls may prevent inbound attacks to your wireless networks. They secure a wireless network in an effective manner.
- Install antivirus and use strong passwords for all network devices and encrypt your files at disk or OS level.
This helps in securing a wireless network in a great deal.
