An open wireless network is one the major threats to your internet security and you may find that your identity is compromised and your bandwidth is stolen. This article will tell you how to secure a wireless network.
To start with you need to click on the “Wireless Network Connection” tab as this will enable you to see a list of networks that are available. This will tell you whether the connection that you are currently connected to is secured or unsecured. If it is a secured wireless network then the next step is to see if it uses the WEP or WPA method of encryption. You can find this information by right clicking on the network you are connected to and then select “properties” from the menu that pops up. Then click on “Encryption Type” this will cause a box to appear and under the security tab you will be able to see what kind of encryption you have.
If you are using an unsecured network then you will need to secure it as soon as possible, and this can be done by getting access to your wireless router. You can do this by typing in the IP address “192.168.0.1” into your browsers address bar, this will then show the default properties of your router. Then the next step is to click on the security tab and then change the “Authentication Type” to WPA, then under “Key”, type in a new password. This password is the one you will be using to access your wireless network in the future. Once you have changed the password click on “Save” or “Apply” and to make sure that you have made the right changes then go back to “Wireless Network Connections” and your network should appear as “Security Enabled Connection (WPA)”.
