You may well have noticed on your travels these strange looking boxes of black and white pixels appearing on everything from television advertisements to billboards and magazines, and you may be wondering what exactly they are? Well to the uninitiated they are known as QR codes. So what are they for and why are they becoming more popular?
QR codes are fast becoming the big marketing and advertising tool for the next decade and anyone who owns a business needs to be aware of just how much potential good they can do for their business.
In order to take full advantage of a QR code a smart phone is needed and there are a lot of new phones on the market that already have a QR code application already installed. However, do not worry if your phone does not already have one, as you can find plenty of QR code reading apps for your phone and they are usually free of charge to download and use. Just bear in mind that there are some QR code readers that are only suited to specific phone handsets, so make sure you choose to download one that is compatible with your phone.
When you have a QR code reading application installed on your smart phone, and then you will need to open the application and use the camera on your phone to scan the QR code. You need to keep your hand as steady as you can and make sure that you capture the whole code, although, perhaps the best thing about QR codes is that they can be read from any angle, or even upside down!
Once your device has scanned the QR code, it will decode the information and then it will open up whatever application it needs to complete the job, such as the internet browser or the email or SMS feature. Mostly QR codes are used to direct the user to a website or a specific webpage within a website with the information they wish to share with the user. However, sometimes the QR code will use your phone to try and prompt you to call or SMS a certain telephone number.
